About Tower of London

The ancient stones reverberate with dark secrets, priceless jewels glint in fortified vaults and ravens strut the grounds. The Tower of London, founded by William the Conquerer in 1066-7, holds some of the most remarkable stories from across the centuries. Despite a grim reputation as a place of torture and death, this powerful and enduring fortress has been enjoyed as a royal palace, served as an armoury and for a number of years even housed a zoo!

Gaze up at the massive White Tower, tiptoe through a kings’ medieval bedchamber and marvel at the priceless Crown Jewels. The famous Yeoman Warders have bloody tales to tell; stand where heads rolled and prisoners wept.

The Tower held many famous prisoners, from the highest levels of society; some in astonishing comfort and others less so… Visit the places of their confinement and read the graffiti left by prisoners from over 500 years ago.

From 26 July 2008 replicas of mighty siege weapons will be positioned in the Moat, you may even be able to help shoot one! Imagine what it was like to attack and defend this powerful fortress, learn the stories of the Tower under attack and of the soldiers who defended it.

Ice skating will also be available from November to January (specific dates yet to be confirmed).

During a recent trip to London, I visited many attractions, and the Tower was by far the best and most worthwhile excursion. At a cost of 17 pounds for an adult admission, the Tower is well worth it: the site is well documented, so visitors less-knowledgeable of history will be able to appreciate the site. Additionally, there are many hands on and interactive elements, such as a CSI style analysis of the Richard III/ young princes conspiracy. And the Crown Jewels are not to be missed! (and make sure to check out the security at the vault!). I could not give this a higher recommendation.

We stopped here as our first sight in London and I really enjoyed it. The size was amazing to be in the middle of a large, modern city and to be able to see the different layers of restoration and repair that it has undergone in the hundreds of years of it's existence. The crown jewels were beautiful along with the other royal collections of trumpets, swords, and serving wear. It was fascinating to ascend the tightly wound stairs to the actual tower where prisoners were kept and had inscribed the masonry.

The Henry VIII exhibit had just opened and I was amazed to see all the military wear for people and horses. Being American, this actually brought to life some of the world history that we seem so detached from. It was an amazing collection of armor and wealth. I would certainly return again!

Tower of London is a must see site. It is very amazing. The highlights were Jewel Crown and the Exhibit of Henry VIII dressed to kill. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to join the Beefeter tour, which was free.

My friends and I got to visit the Tower of London in March and we all had a wonderful time. The Beefeater who gave us the tour was extremely funny. When we went into the Chapel and he told us that Anne Boleyn was buried there, it was unreal. The Crown Jewels were amazing and to see the graffiti on the prison wall's was interesting. We didn't stay to watch the demonstrations they put on outside - we caught a few moments as we walked by and earlier in the week when we were walking around there - but we ended up spending about 3 hours there and it was great. I would definitely go again! They were in the process of constructing their new Henry VIII exhibit, so it would be fun to go back and see that. This is definitely one of the must-see places in London and there's a great little restaurant not too far away called the Dickens Inn.

Stunning, as expected

This place is amazing. It is a true historic site worthy of a visit from everyone. I've been there twice, but I think once would have been adequate. It is worth a visit and is truly spectacular...

This place is amazing. It is a true historic site worthy of a visit from everyone. I've been there twice, but I think once would have been adequate. It is worth a visit and is truly spectacular, but it doesn't change, so once would have been fine, too.
